My Work Strategy

Everyone does things differently. Even if it looks like it was done the same way as someone else, I’m guessing the way their mind worked to get to the end result was different. I find myself spacier and spacier the older I get, not to mention how many more things I need to keep track of on a daily basis. Where did that sippy of milk go from two days ago?? Did I wash that dress I want her to wear to the birthday party? Oh lord, there better be enough eggs for this… and the list goes on and on. So I find myself relying heavily upon lists. Lists are my savior. Hallelujah for lists!

Side tangent complete and now back to how everyone does things differently. I figured I’d show the stages I go through for a somewhat complex cookie order. I’d LOVE to hear how others would have done it or tips for saving time. Believe me…I could use either more time or more efficiency so bring on the suggestions!!

First step is to draft out the design

Once any design wrinkles are ironed out and the concept is complete…

I move on to outlining which colors are needed for each design. It’s now that I also list what areas I’m planning on doing first and second. The “A” column indicates the first layer I’ll do. Once that’s complete (usually over night) I move on to the colors/items in column “B”. I’ve never had to do more than 3 layers but I’m still waiting for that challenge to present itself ๐Ÿ™‚

After I list what colors are for what areas, I write down a complete list of colors I need and begin coloring my icing

Thank god for lists right!! I guess I could mix up all my “layer A” colors first ย and the next night mix up the “layer B” colors, but I’d rather do it all in one shot. Once the icing is all mixed together and thinned out to the right consistency, I begin piping and flooding.

And continue with the second layers until the cookies begin to take shape

Until the cookie is complete ๐Ÿ™‚ Love how these turned out. What a fabulously creative idea…kudos Robin!!

Happy Fourth of July – Patriotic Stars

Happy 4th of Julyย Everyone!!

Just wanted to show a few of the stars I designed this past week that are being shipped to two special states…Tennessee and Pennsylvania ๐Ÿ™‚

Hope they help celebrate our country’s liberty and independence!

A Carnival Came to Town

It’s been way too long since I’ve posted anything. I have been swamped with orders and haven’t had time to actually sit down and type out how my orders were created. The few moments I have had away from my piping bags, I’ve spent trying to get my not even 2 year old to sleep in her new toddler bed. Word to the wise…DO NOT encourage them to climb ๐Ÿ˜‰

I just finished an order and seriously had so much fun creating them! It’s always fun when you are given creative control. I always sit down and think “The world is your oyster! Go for it!!” hehe Well, not really but I do get giddy thinking about what I can do.

The order was for a combined birthday party for a 2 year old boy and his 4 year old sister. The theme was Carnival/Circus. Grandpa wanted to give his grandkids something special so he requested clowns for his grandson and carousel horses for his granddaughter…pink and purple horses to be exact. I hope Princess likes her beautiful horses and Prince loves his funny clown faces ๐Ÿ™‚ I know I do!

Live Love Laugh

I am so excited about this weeks order. A woman found my business card at the local YMCA and called to inquire about cookie favors for her 40th birthday party. “But Of Course!” was my response ๐Ÿ™‚ She sent along a picture of her invitation and I fell in love with the colors instantly!

Amazing colors right! She wanted 3 dozen vanilla and 3 dozen chocolate. I couldn’t wait to recreate the design…fun fun fun!

First step after baking all those cookies was to flood the back ground.

The next step involved brainstorming how to get the 40’s onto the cookie. In the past I have traced printouts using edible markers and piped over that, but this time around I wanted to try a new technique. I recently saw a post by the amazingly talented Sweet Sugar Belle where she used a push pin to poke a center outline on a flooded cookie. I definitely thought this would work well for the size of cookie and printout, so instead of poking the center I used a toothpick and poked the corners of a 40 template, connecting the dots afterwards with icing.

Not only is this woman celebrating 40 years of life, she’s also celebrating her 1 year anniversary since completing her cancer treatments. YEAH!!! So literally, she’s celebrating LIFE! She asked to have the words Live, Love and Laugh on the cookie and I thought it was incredibly fitting. In fact, it’s my new favorite quote ๐Ÿ™‚

And of course, a favor isn’t complete without an adorable tag in coordinating colors. Happy Birthday Virginia!!!

A Week Of Spiders, Stars and Flowers

It has been a LONG week! It started with me pulling my back last Sunday putting my daughter into her car seat on our way to the grocery store. Unfortunately, the “I’ve got to get this stuff done” part of me kicked in and off I trekked to Stop & Shop. Tsk Tsk Tsk ย Needless to say, in mid-turn to weigh my mangos, my back completely went out and I was lucky to get out of the store without flopping to the floor. The past few days have been rough, but my amazing husband and family came to the rescue taking care of the house and kids while I rested. Happy to say my back is sore but no longer painful so I’m soooo happy!!!

Amidst the resting of my back, I managed to ice my heart out every night and get all our orders out. Super happy how they all turned out too ๐Ÿ™‚

Precious Baptism

It seems like I’ve been getting a lot of requests for baptism and first communion favors. Must be in the air!

My most recent cookie challenge was for a little girl’s baptism. Her Mom sent along some photos of baby’s room and a fabric swatch of baby’s bedding. It was the most beautiful dusty rose I’ve ever seen! I tried hard to replicate and hope she likes the colors. Mom wanted vanilla and strawberry, which was cute since the strawberry cookie dough was pink like the bedding! Baby’s room is decorated in cherubs…who wouldn’t want to wake up among those sweet angels ๐Ÿ™‚

I envisioned wispy wings of feathers and used my paint brush to move the icing around for the effect. The hair has some curl to it which I love! When the icing had dried for about 5 minutes I went back with a toothpick and drew in the hair strands, which created curls at the ends. I know baby has light brown hair (peach fuzz!) but pictured curls too ๐Ÿ™‚ ย I wanted big eyes on the cherubs like those from Precious Moments, but with each attempt the eyes got googlier and googlier. So I had to make an executive decision and went with sleepy eyes. I guess I should practice eyes!

I hope Mom and guests enjoy these little ones. It was sad to have such angelic cookies fly away ๐Ÿ˜‰

Cancer Awareness

I could never have anticipated the amazing women I would meet once I became a Mom. It’s like a whole new world opened up and I have to say, after stepping inside you quickly thank your lucky stars you’ve had the opportunity to meet some of these women. I joined a local mommy group when I had my second child and have to say I have the best play groups! I love all the adorable kiddos and enjoy the conversations the Moms have together. I’m not going to lie, it’s nice to have an excuse to get my ass outta the house too!!

Anyway, there’s a Mom in one of my play groups and she has to be one of the strongest, most optimistic women I have ever met. She’s an amazing mother to an almost 5 year old boy and twin (boy and girl) 1 year olds! Talk about time management! Yeesh! She goes nowhere without wearing her smile and has the best sense of humor. Heartbreakingly, her Mother was diagnosed with brain cancer not too long ago. She’s been commuting every weekend a couple states away to spend time with her Mother, which isn’t easy when your family doesn’t pack up easily into an overnight bag (which I’m sure would make things 100 times easier logistically!). I want her to know she’s not alone.

Cancer sucks. Watching a loved one go through cancer sucks even more. I would venture to say every American has been affected by cancer, either being diagnosed with cancer themselves or one of their loved ones. My Grandma died of cancer and I would give anything to have her back or to have had more time with her…God I’ve love to introduce her to her adorable great granddaughters ๐Ÿ™‚ I want my friend Mary to know she’s not alone. It’s not easy, but she has more support than she knows. Our hearts and prayers go out to you Mary!

Happy Mother’s Day Suzanne!

I feel like I’ve been “full steam ahead”, which is awesome, but have been feeling the down side which is I don’t have as much time to write my blog. I clearly need to figure this out because I’ve been missing this part!

A few days ago a friend’s husband emailed asking if I would create some Mother’s Day cookies for his amazing wife Suzanne. The word amazing is seriously an understatement too by the way! She’s a wonderful Mom and soooo deserves a little treat ๐Ÿ™‚ I was excited to make something for her. We decided on a cookie basket of flowers. I know I’m gonna hear about this but I’m gonna say it anyway…as a whole, it’s difficult for men to make decisions. So when her adorable husband emailed me I gave him two options…

  1. Bright and Vibrant
  2. Subtle and Pastel

And of course, he made the perfect decision ๐Ÿ™‚ Happy Mother’s Day Suzanne… you are an amazing Mom!

First Communion Crosses

I was honored to have been asked to create some cookies for an upcoming 1st communion party for an incredibly adorable little girl. I actually got to meet her last night and she’s just precious. Her Mommy picked out matching precious cookies too! 4 dozen delicate crosses with little roses on them. Perfectly paired! I’m sure the party will be beautiful today ๐Ÿ™‚

On a personal note, I just loved the way these cookies turned out that I made an additional 4 dozen! I’m shipping them to some very special ladies ๐Ÿ™‚ Of course in my sleep deprived haze I forgot to put any kind of note in the boxes to these ladies so I guess I’ll email them and let them know the surprise is on it’s way…or maybe it’ll make their day to just get a box of yummies in the mail ๐Ÿ™‚
