Precious Baptism

It seems like I’ve been getting a lot of requests for baptism and first communion favors. Must be in the air!

My most recent cookie challenge was for a little girl’s baptism. Her Mom sent along some photos of baby’s room and a fabric swatch of baby’s bedding. It was the most beautiful dusty rose I’ve ever seen! I tried hard to replicate and hope she likes the colors. Mom wanted vanilla and strawberry, which was cute since the strawberry cookie dough was pink like the bedding! Baby’s room is decorated in cherubs…who wouldn’t want to wake up among those sweet angels :)

I envisioned wispy wings of feathers and used my paint brush to move the icing around for the effect. The hair has some curl to it which I love! When the icing had dried for about 5 minutes I went back with a toothpick and drew in the hair strands, which created curls at the ends. I know baby has light brown hair (peach fuzz!) but pictured curls too :)  I wanted big eyes on the cherubs like those from Precious Moments, but with each attempt the eyes got googlier and googlier. So I had to make an executive decision and went with sleepy eyes. I guess I should practice eyes!

I hope Mom and guests enjoy these little ones. It was sad to have such angelic cookies fly away ;)

Caterpillar Ate Quinn’s Fruit

One of my daughter’s adorable friends turned the big 1 year old recently and had a big birthday bash this weekend. His Mommy did such a wonderful job with all the decorations and made the party unbelievably fun and festive. I was honored that she asked me to bake up some cookies for favors.

Sticking with the Very Hungary Caterpillar theme, I envisioned little green caterpillars crawling all over the place. And then it hit me…FRUIT! You can’t let the caterpillars go hungary for too long right? Here’s where the package from Hong Kong comes in! A nice healthy fruit salad for Mr. Caterpillar is just what he needs :)

I had a fabulous time decorating these little guys and even got my hubby in on the piping. Although, I had to smile when he complained that his hand hurt after 30 minutes of filling caterpillar sections ;) Ahhh the life of a cookie decorator!

FINALE!

70th Birthday

Wow…I feel like I’ve been gone forever! But in reality, it’s only been a week and I know exactly where I’ve been…in my kitchen. While delivering the #1 cookies last Saturday I took another order for tomorrow. An order for 5 dozen favor bags with two cookies each. I’m one of those people that need a calculator so let me help you out…that’s 120 cookies. 120 COOKIES! Sweet order!

So Sunday I decided to spend with my family and then went full board with the cookie stuff starting last Monday. Baked Monday and Tuesday, decorated Wednesday and Thursday and on the 5th night, tonight, I rested (ok bad joke, but I did in fact rest). I do have to say that having Jack Johnson sing about banana pancakes helped on those late nights when all I wanted to do was crawl into bed ;)

The order is for a woman who is throwing a surprise birthday party for her Mom who is turning 70. She wanted something simple and elegant that matched the beautiful invitations that were sent out. I love teal in icing! It looks amazing against the white sugar cookie.  All I have to say is I better get something like this when I turn 70 :)

Birthday Favors

I am thrilled to have been asked to create cookies for a friend and wanted to share the pictures :) Her twins, one boy and one girl, just recently turned the big 1 year old!! They are having a family Birthday party this weekend and she asked me to create some favors. Another friend is making pink and blue #1 cupcakes so I decided to follow suit…perfect theme for a 1st Birthday if you ask me :)) Hope they enjoy them as much as I had making them!

My New Favorite Accessory

I have found my new favorite accessory. I’m usually not the type to go out and buy everything Wilton makes, but on a whim and a suggestion from my cake decorating instructor, I decided to throw a bag of these in my cart last time I was at Michael’s.

And boy am I glad I did! They are amazing!!

ICING BAG TIES

Before this week, I would wind rubber bands around the end of my bags, which was a huge pain when I had to A) put the band on B) move the band down as the icing was used and C) remove the band at the end of the day. These little guys are sooo easy to put on and take off. Just wrap the band around once and stick one end through the other. Presto…bag sealed and tight! And the best part? As the icing is used you just push the band down and it stays tight. No need to remove the band!

Reality Rose

Alright kids, think back to the early 90′s. Back when a new form of tv hit the waves…they called it…Reality TV. Real World was a wicked crazy hit! Real people living real life drama and heart ache in front of national television. Fascinating!

Fast forward 20 years and now Reality TV is on every channel…no matter what time of day it is it’s a sure bet some reality show is on. I’m not into it as much as I was when it was “real” but there are a few shows I still watch for pure entertainment. One of them…The Bachelor. I know, I know…it’s all made up and the women really aren’t all there for the right reason, but I can’t help but love the cattiness :)

Tomorrow is the finale. Where Ben picks the woman of his dreams. Well he’s supposed to but spoilers say he picks the skinny dipping woo-haaa. Still…wouldn’t miss it for the world :) My friends and I are getting together to bitch through the 2 hour finale and I decided to bring treats for our party…

THE FINAL ROSE…

Final Cake Full O’ Flowers

Final class of course 2 in the Wilton Cake Decorating series…COMPLETE!

I was telling the other girl in the class that I enjoyed this course (Flowers and Cake Design) more than the first (Decorating Basics) because we did cooler things, but I missed not bringing something home to eat each week like we did in the first course! hehe  Not that I need it of course and not that my husband and I even eat it, but it was still fun to have a little treat.

Last night I decorated my final cake using the flowers I’d made from the previous classes. I have zero artistic creativity so with some help from the instructor talking through the placement of the flowers I came up with this. Note the last picture is how my husband decided to dig in and eat the cake :)

Rose-a-licious

My amazing hubby sent me flowers for Valentine’s Day. They are on my kitchen counter smelling wonderful and making me smile every time I see them. While yesterday was a tough day for me, today things are looking up! I got both girls down for their afternoon naps and I even got a shower in before noon!! I know, GO ME! I came downstairs after my shower and saw my beautiful bouquet of flowers. I immediately knew what I needed to do.

I popped a waffle in the toaster and started filling up a piping bag (yes…waffle first…a woman does have her priorities after all). I decided to practice my Wilton roses. I hardly had any icing left over from Monday’s class, but enough to make 4 roses. So, as Jack Johnson sang sweet love songs to me I piped away! Definitely better before the icing gets too warm from your hand but I think I did pretty good :)

Get Well Flowers

One of my besties was in the hospital last week and I’m happy to say is home, resting and getting back to her beautiful, happy self again. Thought I’d send a different kind of bouquet of flowers to help her feel better soon…Hopefully she recognizes them as flowers and not over easy eggs ;)

Love you girl!

A Not So Pretty Valentine’s Day Cookie

They can’t all be blue ribbon winners.

No one’s ever told me this, but I can imagine if when I was really good at raising squash or hogs as a kid someone would’ve wound up telling me this as a way to sooth my hurt pride when I didn’t win the local town’s heaviest _____ blue ribbon contest. So as I stare dumbfoundedly (there’s that damn word again) at my cookie I think to myself, “Suck it up girlfriend…they can’t all be blue ribbon winners.”

Scenario…Vanentine’s Day. Two sick kids at home, a kitchen in complete disarray and no boxed cake mix. There’s no way I can make a cake for my hubby with the heavy responsibilities of the day today. Nor can I bundle everyone up for a quick (read hour…don’t forget I have two kids nothing is ever quick) trip to the grocery store to buy a mix. So my next thought…I made cookies yesterday maybe I can decorate one for him. However, the only icing on hand is the one I made for class last night and it wasn’t what I was used to. Needless to say I was rushing things and next thing I knew I was piping out WAY too runny icing on my cookie. Thought the damn was going to hold but when I flooded it it ran over the sides. This picture shows the attempt at fixing it with a little scrapeage. Yeah…not gonna work. So…my hubby has a cookie that looks like it was decorated by his 2 year old daughter. Guess I could go for the cute factor and win a few points in the end ;)
