ABC’s

I have officially deemed Chris as my funniest customer thus far! OMG she is a riot! I enjoyed every email correspondence as it always made me laugh. I even read her responses to my husband and he laughed! Wish we lived closer…I have a feeling it would be fun to get to know her :)

Chris emailed me last week inquiring about alphabet letters. She signed up to bring cookies to her daughter’s school and self diagnosed herself as being in over her head.  I commend her for recognizing this early on…I would have been elbow deep in flour the day before cookies were due, crying to my husband that “I Can’t Do This!!” ;) So pat on the back Chris!! Here’s how our cookie relationship started:

The tutorials I have just watched on youtube have immediately filled me with dread and made me confront my limitations.
So, I am appealing to you. However, before I even begin to search for letter stencils, make dough, xacto cut out the
letters, make a usable batch of royal icing for the very first time in my life, pipe out the outlines, fill them in,
shake cookies, and poke out bubbles for 26 letters (!!!!) I thought I would solicit an estimate from you if you are
interested and available to do this.

How can I say no to someone that funny! It also reminded me when I started getting into cookies and watched hundreds of YouTube videos. I was terrified as well! And those damn bubbles STILL give me nightmares! Grrr…

Had so much fun decorating these cookies…and fun spelling out mine and my daughter’s names. I would have spelled out my husband’s, but he has repeat letters so he had to sit this one out ;)

The inspiration for the uber cool color scheme was taken directly from the book her daughter’s class was reading :)

Happy Halloween Traditions

I am a holiday lover. I get it from my Mom. I grew up with my Mom toting out boxes or bins of decorations for every conceivable holiday and strategically placing them around the house. I loved it. It always felt fun and festive at our house when a holiday was approaching :) Now that I have a family of my own, I have slowly been accumulating my own decorations for the kids. It’s just one of those traditions that I cherish and will continue.

A woman emailed me that she always buys her grandkids cookies for halloween and wanted to send her four grand-lovies some of my cookies this year. Double fun!  A holiday tradition AND sugar…love it!! I hope the kids love their cookies made especially for them sent with love from their Grandma M :)  What a cool Grandma!!

All Things Girlie – Part I

It’s no surprise that most little girls like pink and purple. But what it is they like in pink and purple can cover a wide range of things. For instance, my daughter would request her banana purple if I could do that magic trick every morning ;)

While I have two little girls, my daughters are still young and seem to be more interested in climbing walls and playing in the dirt than in girly activities. So this week was a treat and I got to dabble in the “girly” with my cookies :)

2 birthdays, 3 little girls, 2 of them twins, and lots and lots of pink and purple! I of course had to make an extra cookie of each design for my daughter to see how she reacted to the girly designs. She loved them!!! Hopefully the birthday girls all like their little princesses and fairies as much as my daughter did :)

Happy 1st Birthday Ellie and Natalie! Ellie, after devouring your pixie fairy, you should really thank your Mom for entering your picture in the Dastardly Do bed head contest so you could win these cookies for your party! Your Mom definitely knows a good picture opportunity when she sees one ;)

Lucky Ladies

Picked up a cute little shamrock cutter this past week and immediately thought it would be perfect for the sweepstakes winners! It’s so fun and appropriate since good ol’ St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner. Need to make my deliveries now to the lucky ladies…get it? Lucky. Lucky as in gold. Gold as in gold at the end of the rainbow. It might be deep but there’s a connection there somewhere ;)

To Extract or to Emulsion…That is the Question

I can’t get the evaporated almond extract out of my mind. I’m fixating on it. I kept wondering why the flavoring wouldn’t evaporate out of the cookies in the oven like it did when left out on the counter…both environments it’s exposed to dry air. Hmmm. Seriously I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I decided it had already sucked enough brain power out of me thinking about it so I decided to settle the burning question with some research.

What I found was, extract does “bake out” of the cookies because of the high heat, leaving you with a less flavorful cookie. This is due to the alcohol in the extract.  Apparently, the way to go is to use emulsions. Baking emulsions are alcohol-free and pack a more potent flavor due to the fact that the flavor is incapsulated by a gum type stabilizer and thus protected during the baking process. Again…wish I would have remembered those chemistry classes better!

Decided to buy some from LorAnn Oils and give it a try. It better be good considering the shipping was $3 more than the 4oz bottle of almond emulsion! It if works I might need to shop around and/or see if I can’t find a place locally where I don’t have to bend over for shipping ;)
